Hi everyone...
I'm relatively new to the whole game (December 07) and when I started knew next to nothing about battlegrounds (and probably still don't), and so avoided them entirely. Now my little Orc Rogue - subtlety tree - is level 70 and really wants to go into one as I don't know enough people, nor apparently have a particularly good build for raids or arenas. I'd like to get some nice shiny new kit, as it will prolong the life of my main until WotLK arrives.
Thing is, I'd really like to get into BG's in time. I don't expect instant wins and mastery, nor for the game or players to make it easy for me, but...To be honest, I finally mustered the courage after a beer or two, to set foot in AB. I'd read up on it a little so I knew what the primary goals were, but when I got in there I was treated to a large amount of L2P nonsense from my own side, and the height of humour from the alliance of being constantly farted on. Which, in retrospect, IS kind of amusing...but at the time had me trying to eat my keyboard. One guy whispered me - and this is translated from leetspeek - with a load of abuse saying I should know where to assault and defend. I messaged him back explaining it was my first time in there and was then told to 'learn to play'. Personally, I think I'd find it difficult to learn to play without actually trying to play, but there you go. Is there an expectation that playing at level 70 should mean I know exactly what to do?
Anyway, my point - aside from going in, taking the abuse and slowly working it out, how else should I learn? Is there any kit available outside of BG rewards that may make my time in there easier? We won the match I joined in with, incidentally - I tried to perform a guarding role over a healer who was helping defend. I'd pop out of stealth and attack anyone who went for him whilst he was healing the heavier defence on our side. I'm reading up on strategies now to see where I can best fit in, but...are PuGs ALWAYS that unfriendly? Should I stick out the abuse and do my best with my rogue, or wait until my alt warlock hits late 30's (I've also been scared off the lower-level BG's by twink horror stories that wake me up in the night screaming) and try and learn from the ground up, so to speak?
Any advice / pointers to strategies / shoulders to cry on massively appreciated!
Rev|||Sounds like you've got a handle on starting out with bg's. Seriously when you are learning as long as you don't have high expectations you will do fine just being a lemming. Btw as a rogue dfending in AB you did pretty much what you were supposed to, stay stealthed and murder whoever is attacking other defenders. BUT as a rogue you can be quite a pain the b-hole for the opposition doing offense. when you hear somebody say, "Can somebody go ninja the mine?" they are talking to you :)|||Quote:

Yes, 95% of people expect that EVERYONE knows what to do in BG's especially after level 30 or 40.

Sometimes, but it's generally the younger players that are the most annoying about it all IMO.

I would say yeah stick it out, you waited a long time to BG, and there are expectations of you and your class, but as you said - you need to learn sometime. Also, go into the BGs on your lock from the 6's on . . meaning 36,37,38,39 then wait for 46,47, etc as you'll not get stomped so badly. Every class plays a bit differently in BG's though you have the same objectives, so play them on both toons.

Read the guides, try different specs and builds (mace, dagger, swords, subtly, combat, etc) and watch lots of rogue PVP videos that you can learn what to do and what not to do!
Grim - Total Annihilation series is okay, also just check goggle video, youtube, wowtv (this website), and there's another really great site for warcraft movies that I can't mention. You can PM me if you want the address.
Goodluck, and don't let the supposed l33t players and their idiotic banter get to you. As one level headed mused to a hot headed l33t idiot in a BG last night after this guy is going on and on and cursing at everyone.
Idiot: you stupid asdfsdf's . . .need to l2play and stop asdfing around . . .
Player: "Gee, I love paying $15 a month to hear idiots yell in a simulated world" **rolls eyes**
Idiot: STFU you a$$hole!!!
Player: Well that was worth $1.50 right there lol
everyone in the bg cracked up . . . lol
|||Okay first off, toughen up soldier! You're an Orc and a proud member of the Horde. We practice tough love. Don't drink beer to gain confidence - enter and *know* you will win.
While I take a more nurturing role to newer players, don't go into a BG clueless and expect alot of help. I honestly have to put the fault for the abuse you took on yourself - to draw a comparison, going into a BG blind at level 70 is like stepping up to the plate in High School baseball without knowing how to hold a bat, or which way to run when you get a hit. It was on you to learn a bit about the BG before leaping into it - it's okay that you didn't, but don't expect people to thank you for that.
Anywho, now onto the constructive stuff - you have the kind of thought process of a rogue that will eventually be great. So many DPS are mindless automatrons who couldn't care less about the people who keep them alive. I may heal an MS warrior to keep him alive vs 2, but if 1 of them break off and start wailing on me, 9 out of 10 times I'm on my own. DPS that give back to healers via CCs, or target prioritizing are every bit as useful to a team as healers themselves. Don't expect thank yous and a coffee talk enviornment in BGs - play to win, be positive when you speak in BG chat, and listen to someone who sounds like they know what they're doing. Odds are 3 people are trying to be leaders - but 3 is better than 0.|||When my first 70 hit BGs...
I did not know there was a group number on my icon after hundreds BG games. (I used to open the raid window to see my group numbers.)
I had no idea about BS, GM, ST, LM, INC until I played 10+ AB.
I did not know any strategies until I joined BG premades.
You are doing fine so just keep grinding until you eyes bleed lol.
My suggestion is to join premade and arena. You learn more from BG premades and you get better gears through arenas. Even you lose all the arenas games, you still get arena points.
It took me 15 days played time to get my rogue 388 resil (alliance) and it should be 8 days or less for my beloved hordies.
|||Well, I must say...You fine people here have again restored my faith in (virtual) humanity! Or not humanity, as the case may be. Very helpful and constructive advice and criticism, and good to know that I wasn't making a complete dribbling idiot of myself during my first forays into scary BG land.
I do wish I had gone into them earlier with my rogue - I love the playing style, and think that if I'd learnt more about PvP and BG earlier on, it could only have improved my gaming. I actually didn't even know they existed until about lvl30! Ah, c'est la vie. I'll just have to knuckle down and put the hours in, learn from mistakes, success and the wisdom of others, and maybe even get me a cup of coffee with a friendly healer. Stranger things have happened.
As for toughening up and being a proud member of the horde...if it didn't go against everything in that sentence, then the statement would have brought a tear to the eye!
Once again, thanks for all your assistance, and will hopefully meet you on the battleground some day! On the same side where possible, of course...^^
